Getting started with UK scanning — the legal, sensible way

If you’re new to scanning in the UK, ignore half of what YouTube comments tell you.

The short version

• A receive-only scanner/receiver is generally fine to own and use for general reception (think licensed broadcast and hobby/amateur radio). Ofcom’s public guidance on radio equipment is the place to start: Rules on using radio equipment.
• Transmitting without the right licence is a completely different game — don’t.
• The Wireless Telegraphy Act also covers interception and disclosure. Don’t post private traffic, don’t “share the interesting clip from channel X.”

A sensible first week

1. Learn your local amateur repeaters on ukrepeater.net — output, offset, CTCSS.
2. Put the RSGB band plan somewhere you can see it: rsgb.org/bandplans.
3. If you have an SDR stick, start with SDR# or CubicSDR and explore amateur/broadcast first.
4. Keep a notebook (or use favourites here) of what, where, mode, tone, date last heard.

What we don’t do on Cross Reference UK

No guides to monitoring emergency services, no “how to decode encrypted,” no encouraging illegal TX. Keep it educational and Ofcom-aware.
